With a chance to take sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 conference, the Stanford Cardinal were not able to take advantage of the UCLA Bruins having the night off.
James Harden scored 23 points, eight of which came in overtime and the Arizona State Sun Devils upset the seventh-ranked Cardinal 72-68 at Wells Fargo Arena.
It looked like the Cardinal would leave Tempe with a victory, especially when they held a seven-point lead with 1:49 remaining in the game; however the Sun Devils stormed back to tie up the game and send the game into overtime.
Mitch Johnson narrowed the Sun Devils’ lead down to one at 69-68 with 33 seconds remaining in the extra stanza, but it was not enough, as Derek Glasser made two free throws and Eric Boateng hit one of two to secure the upset.
This was the fourth win in as many chances in overtime for the Sun Devils, who were without the services of their best player, Jeff Pendergraph, who fouled out in regulation.
Before fouling out, Pendergraph scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, as the Sun Devils were able to split the season series with the Cardinal.
In the loss, the Lopez twins came up huge, as Brook scored 30 points and Robin scored 16 points, but it was not enough, as the Cardinal saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.
When they needed them the most, the Cardinal were unable to hit their free throws, as they went 4-for-8 in the last 1:49, when the Cardinal held a six-point lead that went up in flames, when Harden scored after his own miss with six seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
