It had a similar beginning to Thursday's game against Washington State, but in the end the Stanford Cardinal fell to the Washington Huskies, 78-61, Saturday, unable to string together as many runs together as the Huskies.
With the win, Washington ended Stanford's undefeated Pac-10 home record, but also fell one shy of recording at least 79 points in the game, after 5 straight games. The Huskies had 17 second chance points to the Cardinal's 6.
Last Thursday's hero Jeremy Green scored the first 4 points for Stanford, starting all scoring with a layup and a free throw shot, and making another layup during the next possession. Teammate Drew Shiller en thgave Stanford an 8-2 lead with a 3-pointer. Shiller had scored a possession earlier, but his basket was negated after an offensive foul. A 13-0 Huskies run followed, which gave them the lead, and during which the Cardinal were 0-5 from the line and committed at least 4 fouls. Coach Johnny Dawkins marked that it was "contagious." Emmanuel Igbinosa stopped the scoreless run with a basket at about 11:53. Washington then had another run, 14-5, in which Isaiah Thomas scored 5 points, including a 3, while Igbinosa, who also had a 3, provided Stanford's points. During the first half, the Cardinal was a combined 6-14 from the foul line and had 19 rebounds, compared to the Huskies' 26.
Like last game, the Cardinal neared the gap in the second half, but in a more timely fashion. However, 3 runs by the Huskies, did Stanford in. The Cardinal went on a 7-0 run, which included a 3-pointer from Landry Fields and a put-in by Green, which brought the score to within 2, 48-50. Washington then dunked the ball and made another shot, to make it 48-54. Fields factored into bringing Stanford back to within 2, with a shot and then an assist to Andrew Zimmerman to make it 52-54. Then, the Huskies began to pull away with a 6-0 run which was later followed by a 3-pointer from Elston Turner. Washington finally put together another and their biggest run, 8-0, which effectively ended the Cardinal's chances, with two crucial 3-pointers, from Thomas and another from Turner. In the second half, the Huskies markedly improved their field goals and 3-pointers, while Stanford only marginally improved in free throws.
Thomas led all scorers with 20, followed by his teammate Quincy Pondexter with 18, then Fields and Green with 17 apiece.
Game notes: Stanford next faces Oregon on Thursday at 7pm.
