With the way the first half went, you wouldn't think the Stanford Cardinal would emerge with victory, as they did over the Washington State Cougars, 60-58 Thursday in a Pac-10 matchup.

However, that's just what they did as they put together the largest comeback, from 18 points down, since January 28, 2007 in avoiding a five-game losing streak.

Stanford's Jeremy Green's second critical play that put his team ahead down the stretch was the game winner, as he made an open 18-footer with 4.6 seconds left in the game. With about 12 seconds left in the game, Cougars' big man DeAngelo Casto had made a dunk to tie the game at 58 apiece.

The first basket of the first half was the only time Stanford led amidst that time period.. Washington State got to their third team foul by 16:54 of the first half. At least two plays during the first half involved inadvertent turnovers. During one play, the Cardinal's Jarrett Mann fouled Reggie Moore after the latter stole the ball and ran across court. During the other play, Stanford tried to rescue the ball from going out of bounds, which resulted in an easy layup for the Cougars. In the first half, the Cardinal was 2-6 in free throw attempts compared to the Cougars' 4-4. Overall, in the first half, Washington State outdid Stanford in every category.

Between halves, Cardinal head coach Johnny Dawkins remarked that it was a "subdued pep talk, rather than a fire and brimstone one. It was probably one of the first times."

In the second half, the Cardinal markedly changed their statistics, improving in field goals, 3-pointers and free throws, while Washingotn State went the other way. At 9:42 of the second half, the Cougars had 9 team fouls compared to the Cardinal's 1. Green gave his team their first lead since the first half, 53-52, with a 3-pointer and 2:40 left in the game. Cardinal star Landry Fields gave his team their biggest lead of the game so far, 55-52, with a free throw at 2:04.

Green finished with 24 points on 7 of 13 shooting, five 3-pointers, 5 of 6 free throws made, 6 total rebounds and 1 turnover.

Game notes: Casto had 3 steals Stanford next plays Washington State's equal counterpart, Washington, Saturday at 5pm.
