Stanford’s road woes continued in Los Angeles Thursday, as the Cardinal came up short at Pauley Pavilion, dropping a 77-73 Pac-10 men’s basketball decision to UCLA before an announced crowd of 8,903.

The Bruins held on thanks to a pair of free throws by Malcolm Lee with 24 seconds remaining. UCLA reached the .500 mark overall with the win, improving to 11-11, 6-4 in the Pac-10. Stanford remains winless on the road this season, slipping to 10-12 overall, 4-6 in league play.

The loss was Stanford’s ninth in a row away from home, the Cardinal’s longest such drought since dropping 15 road games between the 1991-92 and 1992=93 seasons.

Reeves Nelson led the Bruins with 18 points, followed by Michael Roll with 16 points, Nikola Dragovic with 15 and Tyler Honeycutt contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, as UCLA has won four of its last five contests.

Stanford’s Landry Fields, who leads the Pac-10 in scoring, popped in a career-high 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Cardinal. Jeremy Green added 18 points, but missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to play.

UCLA used a 23-13 run to close out the game and avenge an earlier 70-59 loss to the Cardinal at Stanford in January. The Bruins sank 12 of its last 16 free throws to help seal the win.

A Fields dunk pulled the Cardinal to within one with 1:04 to play. Nelson was fouled and missed both free throws, but Lee, Dragovic and Roll were each 2 of 2 at the foul line in the last 30 seconds.

The Cardinal travel across town Saturday to face USC. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
