BERKELEY-Wouldn’t you that the first game of the season between the Stanford Cardinal and the California Golden Bears would come down to the waning moments.
Brook Lopez scored 23 points, all in the second half and the 20th ranked Cardinal were able to hold on to defeat the Golden Bears 82-77 before 10,077 at Haas Pavilion.
Lopez played only five minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls that sent him to the bench for three quarters of the opening half against the biggest Cardinal rival.
The other half of the Lopez twins, Robin added nine, as the Cardinal won for the third straight time and the second time in a row at CAL.
“Great win for us,” said Trent Johnson.
The Golden Bears were in the game all the way to very end, despite trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half.
When DeVon Hardin hit jumper with 2:48 remaining in the game, the Golden Bears cut the Cardinal lead down to two at 72-70; however the Cardinal then went on a 6-0 run to essentially put the game away.
Mitch Johnson was dynamic, as he scored career high 16 points, including three 3-pointers.
His previous career high was 14 points that he scored against Northwestern State on November 10, 2007 at Maples Pavilion, a 97-58 victory in game two of the Basketball Travelers Classic.
Johnson’s assist-to-turnover ratio was phenomenal, as he dished off seven assists and turned the ball over one time.
Hardin led the Golden Bears with 17 points, it was the first time this season that the senior led the team in scoring.
This was the third time this season that Hardin scored 17 points, the previous two times were against Jackson State (117-74 victory) and San Diego State (77-69 victory) both games played were played in the friendly confines on Pete Newell Court at Haas Pavilion.
“DeVon brought great energy today,” said Ben Braun.
Hardin was one of Golden Bears players to top the double figure plateau.
Patrick Christopher added 16 for the Golden Bears, who dropped their fifth conference game in seven games this season.
Jamal Boykin, a transfer from Duke scored 14 points off the bench for the Golden Bears.
“Jamal gave us energy off the bench, terrific effort,” said Braun.

The Cardinal went to the free throw line 38 times, while making 24.
On the other hand, the Golden Bears went to the free throw line just 19 times and made 15.
The big discrepancy came on the offensive glass, as the Cardinal pulled down 21 rebounds and the Golden Bears grabbed just 12 offensive rebounds.
Drew Shiller was added spark plug for the Cardinal, as he hit two three pointers in nine minutes off the bench.
NOTES: The Cardinal return to the court on Thursday night, when they travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion
