BERKELEY- Despite shooting 20-53 from the field, the 7th ranked Stanford Women's team defeated the California Golden Bears 63-53 before 3,712 at Haas Pavilion. The 3,712 fans that enjoyed the rivalry game between the Cardinal and the Golden Bears is a new Haas Pavilion record.
Naismith Player of the Year candidate Nicole Powell scored 25, despite shooting just 10-of-25 from the field. The senior from Phoenix, also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Powell's partner in crime, Susan Borchardt was the only other member of the Cardinal team to score more than six points versus the pesky Golden Bears defense.
At different points in the game, five different players covered the 6 ft. 2 in. Powell.
"It's a constant every game, "Powell said. "They play me really physical. I have to find ways to still be productive."
Junior Sebnem Kimyacioglu went only 1-10 from the field, and scored just five points for the Cardinal who improved to 14-2 on the season and 7-0 in Pac-10 Conference play.
Senior Nihan Anaz led the Golden Bears in scoring with 15 points, and grabbed a career high nine rebounds in a losing effort. Senior Olga Volkova also achieved a career high. The senior out of Kiev, Ukraine scored 11 points before leaving the game in the waning moments after sustaining an injury to her face.
The 21 points scored by the Cardinal in the first half tied their lowest output of the season in the first half of a game. In their 55-46 loss at Texas Tech, the Cardinal also scored just 21 points against Marsha Sharp's Lady Red Raiders.
"I thought we really did a much better job in the 2nd half," said coach Tara VanDerveer.
"We had people making big shot for us." Down the stretch, Susan hit a big 3 and Nicole hit a big 3. Nicole and Susan have really been constants for us." The Golden Bears have not defeated the Cardinal since February 16, 2001, a 82-73 victory at Maples Pavilion.
The last time that the Cardinal lost to the Golden Bears on the road was on February 12, 1993.
The Cardinal head back onto the road with two games in Los Angeles this weekend. On Friday, the Cardinal travel to Westwood to face the UCLA Bruins on Friday, before playing the USC Trojans on Sunday, January 25.
Notes: Junior Chelsea Trotter missed her third consecutive game with sore knees. Trotter, out of Brea Olinda High School in San Dimas, CA may play this weekend.
