Stanford, CA - The Cardinal played one of their strongest games of the year today as they defeated UCLA 70 to 59. Jeremy Green hit his career high points with 30, and Stanford’s offense followed with great three point shooting and intensity to earn their win.

Stanford lead the first five minutes with strong defense and some accurate shooting from key players like Landry Fields and Jeremy Green. By 7:00 minutes into the half, Stanford had extended their lead to eight points.

UCLA’s Jerime Anderson responded by putting in a couple of quick baskets, including a nice drive up the middle to cut the lead to only 4 points. Stanford followed that with two nice defensive steals, and converted those into three points worth of free throws.

By 12:00 minutes into the game, UCLA had just run a quick play up the court and scored an easy layup to bring them within 1 point of Stanford. The Cardinal was letting up on the defensive intensity that had brought them this far with the lead they had.

5:30 remaining and UCLA had answered the lead, with a sinking three point basket and a steal, UCLA had moved up 23 to 21. The game pace quickened and both teams started answering baskets back. Trotter of the Cardinal scored, then the Bruins Michael Roll answered that net. Jeremy Green answered to that one, and the game was sitting tied at 25 each. Trotter cashed in 2 free throws and Stanford was back on top.

UCLA had the three point game in swing through Roll and Dragovic, and Stanford was having a hard time answering to it. With 1:22 remaining Jeremy Green answered on a winding down shot clock with a deep three point shot to put the Cardinal up 31 to 28. The last two plays of the half were this for that. UCLA setup a 3 point shot with a few seconds remaining, and Green was able to somehow pull out a long three point shot to answer right on the buzzer. Halftime Stanford 34, UCLA 33.

Halftime stats: Stanford was 41.4% FG, 37.5% 3FG, with 63.6% FT. UCLA had them beat with 56.5% FT, 50% 3FG, and 75% FT.

Coming out to the new half Stanford tried desperately to score first but the Bruins got that option. Stanford and UCLA traded nets a few times to find themselves tied at 38s, then Jeremy Green shot another long bomb into the net from right down the middle and Stanford had a 3 point lead once again.

At about 5:00 min into the half, UCLA Gave up 2 team fouls and a quick lay-up for Trotter on the throw in was 2 more points for Stanford, and a five point lead.

Green continued his three point shooting roll, and answered back to a few UCLA baskets. Green already had 23 points, easily leading the team with 14 minutes remaining.

UCLA worked at the lead with hard pushing offense, and a determination to setup their three point game, as Tyler Honeycutt sent in a completely wide open three point shot. 48 to 45 Stanford. Shortly after, Landry Fields connected a 3 point shot with about 10 minutes remaining, Stanford lead was 6.

2 Free throws and a three point shot from Keefe brought UCLA back to within 1 point, as the intensity of both teams stepped up. Stanford was failing at this point to block out the UCLA players down low, giving up defensive rebound positioning to the Bruins. Green came back across the left side and hit a three pointer before the Bruins defense could step up, sending the Cardinal back on top.

Stanford connected on two scoring plays in quick order, forcing the Bruin coach to burn his last timeout. Green drove up a lay in under pressure, and Fields sank his 13th point of the game on a quick pass and short shot into the net(this was after he stole the ball and setup the play). 6:00 minutes remain and Stanford is up 58 to 52.

Fields put in a huge dunk up the middle as he broke through the Bruin line and dunked the ball straight up. This put Stanford up 7 with 5:00 minutes remaining. At this point, UCLA needed to step up and break the momentum, but Stanford wasn’t letting up on them. Veterans Green, Fields and Mann continued to keep the intensity on and the play in the face of the Bruins.

With 2:00 remaining, the Cardinal were leading with a 6 point lead, and Jarrett Mann was shooting two Free throws on a Bruins foul. The second shot failed to go in, Stanford recovered and Jeremy Green drove the net through pressure to deliver a fantastic basket. Landry Fields stopped UCLA as they tried to answer and he put in two more points on free throws. At this point, it was simple execution and ball handling for Stanford to hold on to a 10 point lead with 1:00 minute remaining.

Final Shooting stats:

Stanford FG 47.2%, 3FG 42.9%, FT 60.9%

Jeremy Green 30 points, Landry Fields 16, Zimmerman 8
