STANFORD-Most of the time when you shoot just 28 percent from the floor you are most definitely not going to win the game.
The 24th ranked Stanford Cardinal shot just 28 percent from the floor, and were able to defeat the 22nd ranked USC Trojans 52-46 at Maples Pavilion.
This was the first time since November 20, 1999, that the Cardinal won a game and shot that low of a shooting percentage.
In that game, the Cardinal shot just 26 percent against the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos in a 62-49 victory at the Thunderdome on the campus of UCSB.
On the other hand, the Trojans shot just 35 percent and are going back to Los Angeles with a 0-2 start to the PAC-10 season.
This is the first 0-2 start for the Trojans since the 2004-2005 season, when they lost their first two conference games against the Oregon Ducks by the final score of 90-83 and lost to the Oregon State Beavers by the score of 74-64 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, the Trojans home arena from 1959-2006, when they moved into the magnificent Galen Center.
Freshman sensation O.J. Mayo went just 5-for-19 from the floor and scored just 14 points, in his PAC-10 debut on Thursday night versus the CAL Golden Bears, Mayo scored 34 points in a 92-82 loss at Haas Pavilion.
“Put Fred (Washington) on him,” said Trent Johnson.
Mayo received three stitches just above his right eye after he was elbowed in the first half.
The Cardinal went 17-for-63 from the field, and managed to get a split with the Los Angeles schools thanks to hearty defense against the Trojans.
“Wasn’t pretty, but we found a way to win,” said Johnson.
The Cardinal also turned the ball over 19 times, but outrebounded the Trojans 48-31.
Lawrence Hill, who came off the bench grabbed 13 rebounds, but shot 3-for-11 from the field and scored just seven points in 28 minutes of action.
Anthony Goods led the Cardinal with 11 points, as Goods was the only Cardinal player to score in double figures against a tough Trojans defense.
Washington went 3-for-10 from the floor and scored just eight points for the Cardinal, who improve to 12-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The Cardinal avoided their first 0-2 conference start since the 2005-2006 season, when they opened with two consecutive losses against UCLA and USC in Los Angeles.
Daniel Hackett added 11 for the Trojans, who now return to Southern California to get ready for the number four ranked and undefeated Washington State Cougars on Thursday night.
As for the Cardinal, they head out on the road and will face the Oregon State Beavers at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis on Thursday night.
Brook Lopez went 3-for-10 from the field, and scored just eight points for the Cardinal.
Twin brother Robin went 1-for-6 from the floor, and was held to just two points against a stingy Trojans defense.
Taj Gibson added 11 points for the Trojans, while Daniel Hackett scored 12 for the Trojans.
With the victory by the Cardinal, the all-time series between these longtime PAC-10 rivals is now tied at 116 wins apiece.
The Trojans have not won at Maples Pavilion since February 21, 2002, when they defeated the Cardinal by the final score of 77-58.
