Following last season’s stunning upset of the then number two ranked UCLA Bruins, the Stanford Cardinal returned to the NCAA Tournament after a one-year hiatus.
If the Cardinal want to return to the NCAA Tournament, they must keep winning and defeat teams in the Pac-10, especially the reigning regular season champion Bruins.
Josh Shipp scored 21 points, including hitting five three-pointers and the Bruins made it seven straight wins with a 76-67 victory over the Cardinal at Maples Pavilion.
Shipp hit a huge three pointer with four minutes remaining in the game that gave the Bruins an 11-point lead, and ultimately the game.
With the victory, the Bruins made four wins in five meetings over the 24th ranked Cardinal and it also the sixth straight win for the fifth ranked Bruins.
Russell Westbrook chipped in with 15 points, while freshman sensation Kevin Love also scored 15 in his first ever trip to one of the most dangerous college basketball arenas on the West Coast.
Anthony Goods led the Cardinal with 17 points, as the Cardinal saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end.
Brook and Robin Lopez each fouled out of this Pac-10 opener.
Brook Lopez scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while his twin brother Robin scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
This was a highly contested game, as they were nine lead changes and the game was tied on four different occasions in the first half alone.
