The Cal Golden Bears lost to the Stanford Cardinal in the 110th "Big Game" by a 20-13 score this evening at Stanford.

The loss was the Bears sixth in seven games to end the season.

And the end to a five game win streak for Cal in the Big Game, moving "The Axe" from Berkeley to Palo Alto.

Cal was without DeSean Jackson who had leg problems. A much larger problem was the over 100 yards in penalties. Atter gaining only about 100 yards in the second half, the Cal offense came to life in the final minutes, but it was not enough.

Stanford scored a touchdown early in the game. Cal came back in mid-first quarter with a 46 yard scoring strike from Nate Longshore to Robert Jordan.

In the second quarter, Stanford went ahead with a 15 play drive when Derek Belch booted 36 yard field goal. Cal moved down into position to get a 27 yard field goal from Jordan Kay, knotting it at 10. Belch later got a 38 yard field goal to make it 13-10. Kay missed a 38 yard field goal wide left late in the half.

In the first half Longshore and Justin Forsett had good numbers. In the second half the Stanford defense first stopped Forsett, then applied pressure to the passing game to really slow down Longshore.

Stanford knocked Longshore around with blitzes and his delivery seemed to suffer.

In mid third quarter the Cardinal moved down the field with a one yard pass to the tight end Gondor scoring the TD to make it 20-10.

In the fourth quarter Kay added a 42 yard field goal to make it 20-13. With about three minutes left Stanford back Stewart fumbled on the Cal 43. Inaccurate and dropped passes became frustrating for Bear fans.

The loss made the Bears record 6-6. Not the way to end the season after a 5-0 start. But not everybody was unhappy. Stanford Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said that (this win) "was huge going into next season."

The Bears are just happy it ended. And Cal is still not eliminated from the bowl picture. If Arizona State beats Arizona tonight, Cal would STILL be Pac-10 qualified for the sixth bowl slot.
