Photo Bears slip past Marshall, advance in Alaska Shootout

Ryan Anderson sank four free throws in the last 28 seconds Thursday night, as California held off Marshall 72-70 in opening round play of the annual Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.

The Golden Bears (3-1) face Hawaii tonight in the second round. The Rainbow Warriors outlasted Hofstra 80-79.

Anderson scored19 points for Cal. He broke a 68-68 tie with a pair of free throws and tacked on two more with 3.8 seconds remaining in regulation.

Jean Francois Bro Grebe of Marshall then took a court-length pass and scored quickly, pulling the Thundering Herd to within 72-70. Marshall called time out with 1.7 seconds remaining, but was unable to steal the Bears’ inbound pass.

The game featured 13 ties and 25 lead changes, and neither team led by more than five points.

Ayinde Ubaka led Cal with 21 points, including 5-of-6 three-pointers. Bro Grebe and Travis Aikens each tallied 14 points for Marshall, with Markel Humphrey adding 13.

Cal’s Theo Robertson led all rebounders with nine boards, and DeVon Hardin pulled down eight.
