After a 31-28 loss to Stanford, on the previous Saturday, the Golden Bears await the final game of the 2011 season Game at Arizona State on Saturday, November 26. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m., Pacific Standard Time.

The Bears had come into the 114th Big Game with enough season wins to qualify for a postseason bowl. The loss of the Axe does not change that situation. If anything, Cal’s tenacity will make them a better draw for a number of possible venue. Sources in the blue and gold camp are quietly contemplating the possibility of an invitation to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, to be played at AT&T Park – home of the Bears for 2011 season games – on New Year’s Eve. But this is only conjecture, and the Sun Devils still need to be dealt with.

Zach Maynard stepped up on the soggy turf at Stanford to show his determination, perseverance and flexibility, completing 20 of 30 passes for two touchdowns. He actually passed for more yards than did Stanford QB Andrew Luck (280 vs. 257). Maynard has matured considerably since the beginning of the season when Cal won three in a row and then lost their first three conference games. The same can be said for his brother Keenan Allen, who will be Maynard’s receiver of choice against ASU, in addition to Marvin Jones. On the ground, the Bears will again rely heavily on Isi Sofele.

Arizona State had a close loss of their own, losing the Territorial Cup to Arizona, 31-27. Two passes by Brock Osweiler inside the Wildcat 15 failed in the end, making the difference, and the Sun Devils’ offense will need to be quicker and stronger in the face of the Cal defense, especially given the intensified performance of linebacker Mychal Kendricks.
