After beating Oregon State, 23-6, on the previous Saturday, the Golden Bears await the 114th Big Game at Stanford Stadium on Saturday, November 19. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m., Pacific Standard Time. Despite earlier prognostications about an easy win for the Cardinal, the matchup is likely to live up to its name given the stakes in the rivalry, added to the fact that Cal is coming off two wins in a row and Stanford has seen its streak end in a 53-30 loss to Oregon.
The Bears had lost four games in a row to the Beavers, so the psychological high may carry them into Palo Alto with a sense of potential against the recently defeated and demoralized Cardinal.
In order to achieve a win that would return the Axe to Berkeley, Cal (now 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-12) will have to capitalize on the strengths developed in the half-dozen wins that have made the team bowl eligible. This will surely mean more carries for Isi Sofele, who ran for a career-high 190 yards against OSU. However, the Bears will have to avoid becoming dangerously predictable. It will also mean Zach Maynard throwing to a greater variety of receivers, as he did against the Beavers with Michael Calvin. In facing Andrew Luck and the remainder of the variegated Stanford offense, the Bears will again need stellar performances from linebacker Mychal Kendricks and free safety Sean Cattouse, both responsible for turnovers the previous Saturday.
Cal’s final game for the regular season will be at Arizona State, on November 25, at 7:15 p.m.
