Troy Glaus drove in three runs, teammate John Lackey gave up only two runs on four hits, and the Anaheim Angels diminished the Oakland A’s lead in the American League West to a single game with a 6-2 victory at Anaheim.

Mark Mulder lost his seventh game of the season, and was out of the game by the fourth inning. It was the shortest outing of the season for Mulder, once the front-runner for the American League Cy Young Award.

The A’s, who have been in first place since August 6, have lost 14 out of their 24 games in the month of September.

Mulder gave up four runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings, his second straight poor performance. On Tuesday, he lasted just four innings in a 9-4 loss at Texas, giving up nine runs for the first time since Aug. 10, 2000.

Eric Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the A’s first run in the first inning, but Glaus' run scoring single tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Glaus hit his 17th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning, to give the Angels a decisive 4-1 lead.

The only costly mistakes by Lackey were a pair of wild pitches, one of which scored Eric Byrnes with the final A’s run.

The Angels played without the services of former A’s outfielder Jose Guillen, who was suspended by the Angels (not Major League Baseball) for all remaining Angels games to be played in 2004 for an outburst he had on Saturday when he was pulled from the game for a pinch runner. Since the suspension was levied by the team, Guillen can file a grievance, but does not have the right to appeal and continue playing.

NOTES: The A’s have now finished their road schedule, and will return for a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners before finishing up with a three-game series with the Angels next weekend.
