Thanks to Coco Crisp’s go-ahead base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Oakland Athletics avoided a three-game sweep by Texas and defeated the first-place Rangers 4-3 Thursday at the Coliseum.

Despite the loss, the Rangers’ magic number was still lowered to two when Toronto defeated the Los Angeles Angels later in the day.

Reliever Grant Balfour (5-2) retired the Rangers in order in the eighth to earn the victory. Andrew Bailey hurled a scoreless ninth to pick up his 21st save of the season.

Oakland tied the game at 2-3 on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Scott Sizemore in the seventh. A’s outfielder Jemile Weeks hit his first big league homer in the sixth.

The win completed the Athletics’ home schedule for 2011 a day after Manager Bob Melvin received a three-year contract to continue as manager through 2014.
