The A's are playing their 150th game of the year tonight. The team has officially been eliminated from any chance of winning the Wild Card or the Division. The A's really have been out of contention for a long time yet the players go out and play as hard they can to win a game. We know it's more fun when the team is winning but many players have incentives in their contracts and they do everything they can to reach those goals. Money is a powerful motivator.
There are several players on the club that will be free agents at the end of the season. Among them are Josh Willingham, Coco Crisp and David DeJesus. Their value will go if they perform well. The younger players do their best so that they will have jobs next year. The manager, Bob Melvin, is an interim manager and it is his best interests to make sure the A's do their best so that he will be hired to lead the club in 2012.
By playing hard, the A's can give teams that are trying to win the division fits if they beat their opponents Knocking off a contending team gives the A's satisfaction that they can win and beat the big guys .In addition, teams that do this are known as spoilers. The players have fun and give them something to relish in the off season. In fact, Coco Crisp just made a diving catch. He went full out to get it. The season will be over in two weeks and the players will have winter to get over their aches and pains.
