David DeJesus, Kurt Suzuki and Cliff Pennington supplied the home run power for Oakland Thursday, as the Athletics snapped Detroit’s 12-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory over the Tigers at the Coliseum.

DeJesus cracked a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, while starter Brandon McCarthy threw seven strong innings. McCarthy (9-8) allowed one run – a solo homer by Delmon Young – on five hits, walked two and struck out eight.

The loss temporarily kept the Tigers from clinching their first outright divisional title since 1987, when they won the AL East. Detroit reached the AL playoffs in 2006 as a wild card and defeated Oakland that year in the American League Championship Series en route to a World Series crown.

Detroit’s magic number for clinching the AL East is one – any combination of a Tigers win or Cleveland loss in the next 12 games gives Detroit the divisional title. The Athletics, meanwhile, are mired in the AL West cellar and continue their four-game weekend series against the Tigers.

Weekend promotions

This weekend’s promotions at the Coliseum include a “Star Wars-themed” A’s game and postgame fireworks show. Bay Area Star Wars fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters from the movie series. On Sunday, the A’s celebrate their silver screen debut on Moneyball Day. Ten-thousand fans will receive an A’s/Moneyball t-shirt, and actor Jonah Hill (from the movie) will throw out the first pitch to former Athletic Scott Hatteberg.
