Wilson Betemit hit his first career grand slam, and Bruce Chen won his 10th game of the season Thursday, leading Kansas City to a 6-3 win over the Oakland Athletics in an AL contest at Kauffman Stadium.

Chen, who was 1-13 over a three-season span (2007-09), went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk. Chen (10-7) leads the Royals in victories, despite starting the season in the minors.

Betemit hit his grand slam, also his 12th homer of the year, off A’s starter Trevor Cahill (16-7) in the third inning.

Oakland took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Mark Ellis and Kurt Suzuki and a solo homer by Matt Carson.

Royals closer Joakim Sosa earned his 38th save overall and 31st consecutive in 40 save opportunities.

The loss dropped Oakland to 10 games behind first-place Texas in the AL West.
