The A’s finished their series in Kansas City on a rainy note, both figuratively and literally, as the September storms of the Midwestern region brought about a 60-minute rain delay. When Trevor Cahill finally faced the Royals’ southpaw, Bruce Chen, they each lasted five innings, but with very different results as the home team prevailed 6-3.
The A’s got off to a good start, once the tarps were pulled from the field. Coco Crisp led off with a base hit to right, and reached second as Daric Barton flied out to center, scoring when Mark Ellis singled to left. In the next inning, DH Matt Carson doubled the Oakland advantage with a solo homer into the seats above left field.
But in the third, with one out, Mitch Maier started the Royals’ rally with a double to right. He reached third when Jarrod Dyson knocked an infield hit off the glove of Cahill, and after Mike Aviles popped up to shortstop Cliff Pennington, DH Billy Butler drew his second walk of the night. Wilson Betemit then dueled for nine pitches against Cahill, and on a full count sent a fastball past right field to clear the bases. Another Kansas City homer widened the lead when Butler hit one 410’ over the fence in center field, with Aviles on first after an infield hit.
Chen is the winner (10-7, 5 ip, 6 h, 3 er, 3 w, 2 k, 1 hr) and Cahill the loser (16-7, 5 ip, 6 h, 6 er, 1 w, 4 k, 2 hr). Joakim Soria picked up his 38th save.
The A’s next play the Minnesota Twins at 5:10 p.m. PDT on Friday, September 17 with LHP Brett Anderson (5-6, 2.94 ERA) facing RHP Nick Blackburn (9-9, 5.51).
