Despite winning two out of three against the Texas Rangers this weekend, the Oakland A’s find themselves looking up in the division race and the wild card race.
The A’s have lost seven of their last 11 games, the most recent a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Rangers at Ameriquest Field.
Entering the game, the A’s were tied with the New York Yankees in second place in the wild card race, but the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox and the wild card leading Cleveland Indians moved two game and a half games ahead of the A’s after walloping the Minnesota Twins at Jacobs Field.
The race in the American League West is just as tight, but the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are now two games ahead of the A’s after defeating the American League Central leading Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Mark Teixiera hit his third home run of the series, a three-run shot that made the slugging first baseman the major league leader in runs batted in.
Kenny Rogers pitched well enough to pick up his 13th win of the season, as the lefthander went six innings, giving up three runs and seven hits.
Another former A’s pitcher, John Wasdin, pitched the final three innings to register his fourth save of the season.
In his third start since replacing the injured Rich Harden in the rotation, Joe Kennedy lost for the third time in a row.
Kennedy went 5.1 innings, giving up six runs and eight hits, as his record is now 3-3.
NOTES: Danny Haren will take to the mound on Monday night, as the A’s continue their road trip with a series against the wild card-leading Indians.
The Indians will send 6’7” Vallejo native C.C. Sabathia to the mound in the first game of the showdown at Jacobs Field.
