OAKLAND, CA - SEPTEMBER 10: Cliff Pennington #2 scores on a single by Daric Barton #10 of the Oakland Athletics in the second inning of their game against the Boston Red Sox at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on September 10, 2010 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

The A's combined winning pitching by Trevor Cahill (17-6, 7 ip, 3 h, 2 w, 4 k) with strong run support to earn a decisive shutout over the Boston Red Sox, 5-0, before over 19,000 at the Coliseum. The visiting starter, Clay Buchholz, left the game in the second inning and is the loser (15-7, 1+ ip, 5 h, 5 er, 4 w, 1 k).

In the first, Coco Crisp made a spectacular catch at the wall in center field, turning Ryan Kalish’s potential home run into an out. In the bottom of the frame Crisp -- who stole three bases in the game -- singled and Daric Barton walked. Kurt Suzuki hit a 2-RBI single and would eventually cross the plate himself. Barton also drove in two runs in the next inning, delivering Jeff Larish and Cliff Pennington. The remainder of the evening was a defensive clinic put on by the Athletics, to the chagrin of the visitors

The two teams meet again at 6:05 p.m. PDT on Saturday, September 11, with southpaw Brett Anderson (4-6, 2.97 ERA) facing John Lackey (12-9, 4.48).

The A’s have selected left-handed pitcher Bobby Cramer from Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster the A’s transferred Adam Rosales to the 60-day disabled list.

Cramer began the year with the Athletics organization but was loaned to Quintana Roo of the Mexican League on March 16. He went 13-3 with a 2.95 ERA in 22 games, 20 starts, and allowed a .244 opponents batting average. Cramer led the Mexican League in wins, strikeouts (123), complete games (5), shutouts (3) and winning percentage (.813), ranked third in ERA and opponents batting average and was fourth in innings pitched (128.0). He also went 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA in three games, two starts, in the postseason. The 30-year old left-hander was returned to the Athletics organization August 3 and was assigned to Triple-A Sacramento where he went 2-2 with a 1.94 ERA in seven games, all starts. He struck out 35 in 41.2 innings and combined with both teams for a 15-5 record, 2.71 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 169.2 innings.

Cramer was originally signed by Tampa Bay as a non-drafted free agent on April 18, 2003 and spent two seasons in the Rays farm system. He did not pitch in 2005 and 2006 and signed a minor league deal with the Athletics on May 18, 2007. Cramer pitched for the Orange County Flyers of the independent Golden League in 2008 before returning to the Athletics in 2009 when he combined for a 5-5 record and a 3.88 ERA in 20 games, nine starts, with Single-A Stockton, Double-A Midland and Triple-A Sacramento. He will be making his Major League debut.
