Today the 27 year old Guillermo Moscoso pitched the game of his baseball life at the Oakland Coliseum. Moscoso is from Venezuela and began his career when he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2003. He was traded to the Texas Rangers in 2008 and played in their minor league system in 2009 and 2010. Texas brought him up to the Big Leagues in each of those years and he appeared in eleven games with no record. The A's traded for him on January 8th,2011.
Moscoso did not start the season with the A's as the starting rotation was set but injuries to Dallas Braden and Brett Anderson made it necessary for the A's to bring him up from Sacramento. Moscoso
was recalled on May 24th. Moscoso won his first two starts but lost four of his next seven starts . He was optioned to Sacramento on July 7th and came back to the A's to pitch on July 19th. He entered today's game with a record of seven wins and eight losses and an ERA of 3.63.
One of the adages in baseball is “you never know what you are going to see at today's game.” That was so true today as Guillermo Moscoso went out to face the Kansas City Royals. The Royals overall record is the second worst in the American League but they have five players at the top of their lineup that can really hit. Moscoso was brilliant today. He mesmerized the Royal hitters one after another. Moscoso retired seventeen Royals in a row before walking his fellow Venezuelan, Alcides Escobar. He retired the last thirteen men he faced in his last outing and seventeen in a row today to set a new team record of 30 in the process. The previous record was 29 men retired in a row held by Dallas Braden and Catfish Hunter.
The fans were excited as Moscoso went into the eight inning with a no-hitter intact. Another Venezuelan, Royal catcher Salvador Perez, singled to break up the no-hit bid. The fans rose to their feet and gave Moscoso a round of applause.
Moscoso didn't finish the game. He left with two outs in the ninth having thrown 129 pitches.
The fans gave the young man a well deserved standing ovation. It was just a beautiful pitching performance by Moscoso. Royals broadcaster Ryan Lefevre commented after the game “ Moscoso was truly remarkable and his effort was something to behold.” Moscoso has a one year contract with the A's but I have a feeling that Guillermo will be with the A's for a long time and will be an important part of the staff. Great job, Guillermo!!
