In the first of a double-header, the Red Sox used multiple-run innings among across five frames to defeat Oakland 9-3.
The winning run came as the final one in the first of such innings. With two outs against Guillermo Moscoso, J.R. Reddick walked, Jason Varitek hit a home run, Mike Aviles singled and Jacoby Ellsbury doubled him in.
The A’s were never able to get more than one run in any inning.
Boston scored in the first frame when Dustin Pedroia singled in former A Marco Scutaro from second base to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
Oakland newcomer Brandon Allen tied the game the following inning, though, with a leadoff home run, his fifth hit in three days.
During the top of the third, the A’s Jemile Weeks stole second, Cliff Pennington walked and then both stole their next base. Coco Crisp made the running count with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the inning, the Red Sox responded with their second three-run inning as Adrian Gonzalez hit a leadoff double, Pedroia walked and David Ortiz doubled them in. Pennington committed an error as well, allowing Ortiz to advance another base. Carl Crawford then completed Ortiz’s run along the bases with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.
Aviles’s speed mainly enabled Boston to get yet another run in the bottom of the fourth, as he got to first on a bunt, stole second and scored on a single by Pedroia.
Oakland pitcher Craig Breslow came in during the bottom of the fifth and gave off a leadoff double, but got the next two outs. Varitek singled though, afterwards, to bring the score to 9-2.
Scoring then came to a standstill, until the top of the ninth, when Pennington singled in Kurt Suzuki for the game’s final run.
Game notes: It was Jon Lester’s (14-6) third straight win and also third straight time he only gave up one earned run pitching at least six innings. Moscoso, on the other hand, gave up a season-high seven earned runs while pitching four innings.
