OAKLAND-With the exception of handful of players, most major leaguers were not even born when the Detroit Tigers faced the Oakland A’s in the 1972 American League Championship Series.
In their first post-season on the West Coast, the A’s defeated the Tigers in five games to move onto the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, where they would win the first of three consecutive World Championships.
Unfortunately, that series would be best remembered for a nasty situation that would put a damper on the series.
The incident came in the bottom of the seventh inning, and it came in Lerrin LaGrow’s only inning of the series.
Bert Campaneris, the A’s shortstop was having a great day at the plate, as he picked up three hits, scored two runs and stole two bases.
LaGrow hit Campaneris in the ankle, and after glaring at LaGrow, Campaneris threw his bat at LaGrow, just missing the Tigers hurler, who ducked.
After the bat missed LaGrow, both benches emptied and in the process, Tigers manager Billy Martin was held back from going after Campaneris.
When all was settled, both Campaneris and LaGrow were suspended for the remainder of the American League Championship Series.
