The A’s began a series hosting the Detroit Tigers, who are battling for the AL Central lead against the Chicago White Sox. Gio Gonzalez (4-3) and Edwin Jacobs (9-5) faced off. Gonzalez pitched well (5.2 ip, 4 h, 3 er, 4 w, 9 k, 2 hr; 4-4) but Jacobs fared better (6 ip, 6 h, 2 er, 1 w, 5 k, 10-5). The key element, for the second straight game in a row, was lack of run support for strong Oakland pitching.
It only took Detroit three runs to win. Two of them came on solo homers, in the first and third innings, by Ryan Raburn. The Tigers’ winning run came in the sixth on an RBI single by Clete Thomas, after which Gonzalez left the mound.
The Elephants’ scoring began with a run in the second by Ryan Sweeney, who led off with a double and was driven home on a single by Jack Cust. It ended with an RBI double by Rajai Davis in the seventh.
Detroit reliever Fernando Rodney picked up his 26th save.
The two teams meet again at 6:05 p.m. PDT on Saturday, August 22, with Armando Galarraga (6-10) facing fellow RHP Trevor Cahil (6-l2).
