The A’s continued their home series against the New York Yankees, after a 3-0 shutout the previous evening. Vin Mazzaro, who grew up in New Jersey rooting for the Bronx Bombers, took the mound for Oakland against C.C. Sabathia (13-7), who grew up in Vallejo rooting for the A’s and pitched for New York It was rumored that Sabathia left approximately 150 tickets for family and friends, and was planning a trip the following day to his former grade school in Vallejo. But in the mean time, he racked up his 14th win (8 ip, 5 h, 2 er, 1w, 7 k, 2 hr).

The evening got off to a rocky start for Mazzaro, who followed his inclination to pitch inside to Alex Rodriguez and wound up hitting A-Rod, but the pinstripers did not score in the first. In the bottom of the frame, Sabathia then threw a purpose pitch behind Kurt Suzuki, who responded by sending C.C.’s fastball into the seats above left field. Tommy Everidge, the DH for the evening, parked one in the same place in the following inning. Both homers took place with none on and two out. But that was all the scoring for Oakland. After five innings, the Yanks were tied with the Elephants, 2-2, but erupted for five runs in that inning and never looked back. Mazzaro did not get the loss, which was recorded for Jay Marshall (0-1, 3 h, 4 r, 4 er) who relieved him.

The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19, with Brett Anderson (7-6) facing former Athletic Chad Gaudin (5-10).
