The Athletics came back from losing the first game in their series at Texas by winning over the division leaders 3-1, evening the match and coming back to 7 ½ games behind.

The winner was Trevor Cahill (now 10-4, 8 ip, 2 h, 3 w, 4 k, 2.98 ERA) and the loser was fellow righthander Colby Lewis (now 9-7, 7 ip, 5 h, 1 er, 2 w, 8 k, 3.40 ERA). Craig “Never Say No” Breslow earned his first save of the year.

The game was a defensive clinic on both sides, until the A’s drew first blood in the sixth on Kurt Suzuki’s solo home run to left, his twelfth round-tripper of the season. In the eighth, he would drive in another run as Coco Crisp singled to center, advanced on Josh Hamilton’s error and after Daric Barton’s sacrifice bunt came home on Suzuki’s single to right. Suzuki stole second, reached third on Jack Cust’s base hit to right and came home on Nelson Cruz’ error.

The Rangers’ only run came in the ninth when Julio Borbon singled past Kevin Kouzmanoff, whose error in fielding the ball and throwing to first drew Barton off line and allowed Borbon to reach second; he came home on Vladimir Guerrero’s double to left. Breslow struck out the next two batters, Hamilton and Cruz.

The two teams meet again at 5:05 p.m. PDT on Thursday, July 29 with RHP Vin Mazzaro (6-2, 3.45 ERA) facing LHP C.J. Wilson (9-5, 3.03 ERA).
