The Athletics began a three-game series hosting the Chicago White Sox, leading the AL-Central. Starting pitchers were RHP Trevor Cahill (9-3, 3.19) and LHP Mark Buehrle (8-8, 4.18). Buehrle came into the game winless at Oakland in ten tries, and tonight broke the jinx, winning 5-1 in a complete game (9 ip, 4 h, 1 er, 2 k, now 9-8). The loss went to Cahill (7 ip, 4 h, 3 r, 2 ewr, 2 w, now 9-4).
The scoring began in the fourth when Alex Rios doubled to left, advanced on Paul Konerko’s groundout to second and came home when Carlos Quentin flied out to right. In the sixth, the Sox added two more runs: Juan Pierre walked, reached third when Omar Vizquel grounded to left and scored when Rios hit a grounder that shortstop Cliff Pennington could not hold on to. Vizquel moved to second on Pennington’s error, scoring when Quentin grounded out. Chicago would pour it on in the ninth when Henry Rodriguez was pitching in relief: Quentin walked, stole second and reached third on DH Mark Kotsay’s single to left. A.J. Pierzynski then singled to center, stole second (his first theft of the season) and drove in both Quentin and Kotsay.
The A’s lone run came in the seventh when Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled to left and came home on Jack Cust’s two-bagger to right.
