PHOENIX, Ariz. – It wasn’t all that long ago that the Arizona Diamondbacks shipped five prospects to the Oakland Athletics for righthander Dan Haren. December of 2007 to be exact.
Less than three years later, Haren again is a popular name being tossed about as the first trading deadline approaches at the end of the month. But, D-Backs CEO Derrick Hall insists that if Haren is shipped out, it won’t be for a bargain price.
Tough as it is to make trades these days, Haren’s contract is considered “tradable,” meaning there isn’t as many strings attached to get in the way of making a deal. The righthander – who sported a 43-34 record and an All-Star appearance for the A’s from 2005 through 2007 – has two years and an option year left on his current contract with Arizona, which does have a partial no-trade clause that would allow him to veto a trade to 12 teams.
Reportedly, the Yankees are interested (aren’t they always?), and so is Detroit and Minnesota, among others. It all depends on what kind of package these teams can put together to make the D-Backs interested.
Hall has made it clear, though, that if teams don’t make what the D-Backs consider to be a fair offer, they’re more than content to keep him around. The Diamondbacks aren’t being greedy, just practical.

When the A’s open their weekend series at the Coliseum Friday against the Chicago White Sox, they’ll do so with their fifth annual Dog Day at the Park. Fans who pre-purchase tickets are invited to the pre-game “Pup Rally” and “Pup Parade” before watching the 7:05 p.m. game in the dog-friendly Plaza Reserve section.
Princess Abby, winner of the 2010 World’s Ugliest Dog contest, will lead the “Pup Parade.”
A portion of the proceeds from the pre-game ceremonies benefits Dogs4Diabetics, a nonprofit organization that trains medical-alert dogs to detect hypoglycemia in humans.
