Despite the 4-4 tie, Oakland seemed the more likely candidate to lose to the Boston Red Sox as they died in the middle of the game, but came back in stunning fashion with two outs to win in ten, 5-4.
With one out, Daric Barton singled and moved to second on a balk by pitcher Ramon Ramirez Kurt Suzuki was then intentionally walked before a pitching change. The A’s then brought in Adam Rosales, but he struck out. Boston made another pitching change, but Kevin Kouzmanoff singled in Barton for the winning run anyhow.
Red Sox pitchers Tim Wakefield, Manny Delcarmen and Hideki Ojakima combined to shut down Oakland from the last out in the bottom of third until two outs into the bottom of the eighth, with Wakefield getting ten of them and avoiding his third straight loss. The A’s only had two 1-2-3 innings.
Boston’s Marco Scutaro led off with a single his second straight game, but this time made it home thanks to a single by David Ortiz and a double by Kevin Youkilis, to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
Boston added three more runs in the second. Mark Cameron hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Bill Hall. Hall then moved to second on Suzuki’s fielding error, scored on a double by Scutaro and Scutaro scored on a double by Darnell McDonald.
The A’s saw the Red Sox’s three-run inning and raised them one to tie the game in the bottom of the third. With one out, Coco Crisp doubled, Barton walked and both created a successful double steal. Suzuki was then hit to load the bases. Afterwards, Jack Cust doubled in Crisp and Barton, Suzuki and Cust advanced a base on a passed ball and Kouzmanoff brought in Suzuki with a sac fly.
In the top of the fifth, after two straight strikeouts, Boston’s Adrian Beltre singled, J.D. Drew was hit and after a pitching change, Cameron was walked to load the bases. However, Ross Wolf managed to get Hall to groundout to end the threat.
A similar situation occurred in the top of the sixth when the Red Sox’s Kevin Cash was hit, Scutaro walked, McDonald sacrificed them over and Ortiz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Michael Wuertz ended up taking over by striking out Youkilis and inducing Beltre to hit a groundout, which got Ortiz.
Oakland was able to get a single and walk in the bottom of the eighth, but Kouzmanoff struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the A’s Rajai Davis walked and stole second, but Cliff Pennington popped out to lead the teams into extra innings.
Oakland’s Dallas Braden, who just returned from the disabled list, was still unsuccessful in his bid for a comeback since Mother’s Day, the longest since a perfect game ever. He lasted only 4.2 innings, and though he gave up only one run, he gave up ten hits for the second straight game, but struck out six.
Game notes: Each team had two hit batters and five walks apiece. Oakland pitcher Cedrick Bowers returned to Triple-A. Wednesday’s game is a 12:35pm start.
