The Athletics opened a three-game series at their former stomping grounds in Kansas City, throwing LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-4, 3.79) against RHP Zack Grienke (5-8, 3.71). As it turned out, it was an auspicious beginning to the second chapter of the season, as Gonzalez bettered his record to 8-4 (7 ip, 7 h, 1 er, 1 w, 3 k) and Grienke is now 5-9 (6 ip, 4 h, 5 r, 2 er, 4 w, 3 k).

In the first, the Oaklands got the benefit of a reversal of a call by the umpires, when a ball hit to right by Coco Crisp was determined to be fair and therefore a double; this was eventually their first run when Jack Cust sacrificed him home. In the bottom of the inning, Kansas City evened the score when Scott Podsednik doubled, reaching third on Jason Kendall’s base hit and coming home when David DeJesus hit into a double play. However, that would be the home team’s only run of the evening.

Next inning, the parade of doubles continued with one off the bat of Kevin Kouzmanoff, who scored when Mark Ellis hit a comebacker and Grienke’s throwing error gave the A’s their second run plus a lead they would not surrender. In the fourth, a missed opportunity at a double play by the Royals’ shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt put two runners on base; eventually three unearned runs were added to the Elephants’ total, thanks to singles by Kouzmanoff and Ellis.

The two teams meet again at 4:10 p.m. PDT on Saturday, July 17, with RHP Trevor Cahill (9-3, 2.94) facing LHP Bruce Chen (5-3, 3.81).
