Three Oakland Athletics are a part of the All-Star team: Manager Bob Geren part of the coaching staff, closer Andrew Bailey part of the active roster and starting pitcher Trevor Cahill, with his first All-Star selection. Both Cahill and Bailey live together in Walnut Creek.
The A’s head into the All-Star break on a two-game winning streak, most recently with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Cahill moved to 9-3, but became ineligible for the All-Star active roster when he threw his first pitch. All-Star starters who pitched on Sunday automatically went to the inactive roster as part of a new rule. Bailey, who earned his first All-Star berth last year, got the save in the game.
If Oakland starting pitcher Dallas Braden can throw in a rehab game Thursday, he will be part of the post All-Star break rotation. Teammate Conor Jackson meanwhile will be working on his strained right hamstring during the All-Star break, with his future availability unknown.
The National League will try to do what they can to end the 13-year American League winning curse, minus the tie in 2002 between both leagues.
Philadelphia skipper Charlie Manuel will lead the National League for the second year in a row. Tim Lincecum, Roy Halladay, Josh Johnson, Ubaldo Jimenez and more will be commanding the National League’s strong pitching staff.
The rosters are a mix of Sunday starter replacements, player and fan voting, manager selections and final men. Nick Swisher was the last selection for the National League and Joey Votto the last for the American League.
David Ortiz aka “Big Papi” won the Home Run Derby as part of All-Star festivities. He hit a total of 32 home runs.
Game notes: The A’s resume play in Kansas City to face the Royals Friday at 5:10pm. The All-Star game kicks off Tuesday at 5:05pm on FOX in Anaheim’s Angel Stadium.
