Looks like A’s Cahill could miss All-Star tilt

The Oakland Athletics are enjoying a day off before launching into a three-game weekend series at the Coliseum against the visiting Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Probables for the A’s are Vic Mazzaro (4-2) on Friday, Ben Sheets (3-8 on Saturday and Trevor Cahill (8-3) on Sunday.

Cahill was selected to the American League All-Star team earlier this week. Because of the new rules to ensure that both leagues make an attempt to win the game, Cahill is ineligible to play in the mid-season classic on Tuesday in Anaheim as soon as he throws one pitch against the Angels on Sunday. No All-Star starting pitchers can work on the previous Sunday if they are to play in Tuesday’s annual exhibition.

At lest Cahill isn’t alone. The same fate awaits CC Sabathia of the Yankees. The bad news for the A’s, however, is that AL manager Joe Girardi does not have to replace Cahill with another Athletic.

In the meantime, ex-Athletic Nick Swisher of New York won the fans vote for the final AL roster spot.

On Wednesday, the A’s recalled right-hander Ross Wolf from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-hander Tyson Ross to the River Cats. Wolf was acquired by Oakland in the deal on June 22 that sent Jake Fox to Baltimore.
