The Athletics continued hosting the New York Yankees with A.J. Burnett (W, 7-7; 7 ip, 5 h, 2 er, 2 w, 3 k) facing southpaw Gio Gonzalez (L, 7-6, 4 ip, 8 h, 5 er, 5 w, 1 hr, 1 wp). It was Oakland’s last chance to win a game this series but they were swept with a 6-2 New York win.
The A’s drew first blood in the third when Coco Crisp drove in a run with a base hit. Jack Cust did the same in the sixth, but these two RBI singles would not be enough. Gonzalez held his own until there were two out in the fourth, when Ramiro Pena hit an RBI single; he reached second when Gonzalez threw a wild pitch and came home when Derek Jeter singled and former Athletic Nick Swisher drew a base on balls. Mark Teixeira’s homer to left center made it a 5-1 game. The pinstripers added a run when Swisher homered in the sixth off A’s reliever Michael Wuertz
The A’s host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at 7:05 p.m. PDT. Probable starters are Joel Piniero (9-6, 3.96 ERA) and Vin Mazzaro (4-2, 3.81).
The A’s have selected right-handed pitcher Ross Wolf from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-handed pitcher Tyson Ross to Sacramento , the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred Eric Chavez to the 60-day disabled list.
Wolf was acquired by the A’s from Baltimore along with cash considerations on June 22 in exchange for Jake Fox. He was 0-2 with a 2.11 ERA in 25 relief appearances with Triple-A Norfolk and then posted a 1.29 ERA with three saves in seven outings with Sacramento for a 1.99 ERA in 32 relief appearances overall. The 27-year old right-hander held the opposition to a .196 batting average, including .174 with runners in scoring position, and yielded one home run in 45.1 innings. Wolf had a 14-game, 15.2-inning scoreless streak before allowing a run in his final Triple-A outing yesterday at Reno. He was originally drafted by Florida in the 18th round of the 2002 draft and made his Major League debut with the Marlins in 2007, posting a 0-1 record and 11.68 ERA in 14 relief appearances.
Ross was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was 1-4 with a 5.49 ERA in 26 games, including two starts. He had appeared in just two of the A’s last 12 games.
