Every year there is a flurry of deals as the trading deadline approaches. The deadline for trades to be made without going through waivers is July 31st. This is the time when the phones at the general manager's office is ringing off the hook. There are teams that need position players and there are teams that need pitching. There are players that will be moved due to the fact that they will be a free agent at the end of the year and a contending team will be willing to “rent” the player in order to make it to the playoffs.
Will the A's be a seller or a buyer? The A's currently are eleven games under the .500 mark and it looks like they will not be a buyer. They have indicated that they are sellers by trading ten year veteran,Mark Ellis to Colorado for a triple A pitcher and a player to be named later. Will the A's be able to get anything for their players should they continue to be a seller. Most of the A's position players are journeymen and will not get much on the trade market. The A's have a very valuable commodity in their pitching staff but it is unclear if they would be willing to part with a front line pitcher such as Trevor Cahill or Gio Gonzalez. They may move Josh Outman, Graham Godfrey but don't expect too much in return. They A's do have to makes some moves to improve the offense as they are last in the
American League in home runs and have a team batting average of .236. If they are relying on pitching they will need to shore up the defense as the have committed 68 errors this year which is third in the major leagues this year. The errors have led to 47 unearned runs which is the most in the majors
So it looks like that the A's need help with the offense and defense and the only chips that they have is pitching. What will they do ? Stayed tuned.
