The Athletics again wore their gold jerseys, and tested the mettle of the Seattle Mariners, whose southpaw Jason Vargas (6-5, 6.57 ERA) was up against RHP Guillermo Moscoso (2-4, 2.51) in a midday game at the Coliseum, where the sun was high and the temperature rose from 70 degrees towards the eighties.
It would be a pitcher’s duel of major proportions, lasting only 2:12, in which Moscoso shut out the visitors and surrendered only two hits and one walk, striking out five over seven innings. He is now 3-4 and has an ERA of 2.16. Joey Devine and Andrew “Daily” Bailey each pitched perfect innings and Bailey got his eighth save. To Vargas’ credit, he pitched a complete game (5 h, 2 er, 1 w, 6 k).
Oakland wasted no time. After leadoff hitter Jemile Weeks popped out to second baseman Dustin Ackley, Scott Sizemore shot a Vargas fastball into the seats above the out-of-town scoreboard in left field, notching his third homer and fifteenth rbi. The A’s other run came in the fifth – just after the sun-drenched crowd of 19,491 started “the wave” – when Cliff Pennington singled, advanced on a throwing error by shortstop Brendan Ryan, reached third on Vargas’ balk and came home on Sizemore’s base hit, giving the Athletics’ third baseman two rbi for the day.
The Mariners had two other errors, both fielding, by third baseman Chone Figgins in the fifth and first baseman Justin Smoak in the sixth.
The A’s next play at Texas, with Rich Harden (1-0) taking on RHP Derek Holland (6-4, 5.10) at 5:05 PDT on Thursday, July 7.
