Francisco Cervelli provided the winning run with his first RBI since June 15 as the New York Yankees won their third in a row, in a 3-1 victory over Oakland.

The A’s Ben Sheets got the first five runners out before Nick Swisher hit a double. Curtis Granderson then tripled him in and Cervelli singled in Granderson to give New York a 2-0 lead.

Oakland’s Cliff Pennington also got a triple in the bottom of the third. Coco Crisp then brought him in with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

The A’s Mark Ellis led off with a walk in the bottom of the fifth, but Vazquez subsequently induced three groundouts to erase the walk.

The 3-1 score came from Mark Teixeira’s one-out home run in the top of the sixth.

The Yankees’ Mariano Rivera provided a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with one groundout and two fly outs.

New York’s Javier Vazquez (7-7) broke a two-game losing streak, going seven innings while giving up three hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.

Sheets (3-8) went 7.1 innings, giving up eight hits, three runs and striking out four.

Game notes: The Yankees remain two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays. Oakland right-handed pitcher Clay Mortensen returned to Triple A Sacramento and outfielders Matt Watson and Matt Carson came the other direction. It is the first time Watson is playing in the majors this year. Outfielder Conor Jackson was put on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. The A’s will host both sides of the coast, with the Los Angeles Angels arriving after. There will be fireworks after Saturday’s game. New York and Oakland play the middle of this three-game set at 7:05pm Wednesday.
