The Athletics lost to the Marlins, 3-0, in an interleague game characterized by two Florida home runs and two Oakland errors. Ricky Nolasco got the win and is now 5-4 with a 4.08 ERA; Guillermo Moscoso took the loss (2-4, 4.51).
The visitors took the only lead they would need in the first, when Emilio Bonifacio reached base on an error by shortstop Cliff Pennington; Hanley Ramirez then homered to center to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Logan Morrison hit a solo shot to right for the third Marlins’ run.
The two teams meet again at 12:35 p.m. PDT on Thursday, June 30, on a special day: A’s players and coaches will join Bay Area radio and television personalities and local newspaper reporters to serve root beer floats in the Eastside Club at the Coliseum from 10:35 a.m. to 12:35 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Admission is free to the event with a ticket for that afternoon’s game.
Among those who are expected to participate in the event alongside Bay Area radio and television personalities and newspaper reporters include A’s manager Bob Melvin, current A’s players Andrew Bailey, Craig Breslow, Mark Ellis, Gio Gonzalez, Cliff Pennington, Adam Rosales, Jemile Weeks and Brad Ziegler, former A’s players Vida Blue, Dave Stewart and Tony Phillips, wives of A’s players and A’s broadcasters Ray Fosse, Glen Kuiper and Vince Cotroneo.
MUG Root Beer and Orange Crush floats will be priced at $2 each and additional money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will be raised through tips given in exchange for autographs from celebrity scoopers. In addition, 32oz. mugs with unlimited root beer float refills will be sold for $15 and 32oz. mugs autographed by A’s pitcher Trevor Cahill will be available for $25, while supplies last. Floats made with sugar-free ice cream and diet MUG root beer will be available to fans at designated tables in the Eastside Club.
Last year’s MUG Root Beer Float Day raised over $31,000, and since 2003, the A’s have raised over $300,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A’s MUG Root Beer Float Day is sponsored by Pepsi. The ice cream for the event is donated by Dreyer’s.
Founded in 1978, the Greater Bay Area Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is one of the largest fundraising Chapters in the nation, contributing more than $5 million to diabetes research annually.
