Things started before the game as Oakland‘s Vin Mazzaro came through when he was told shortly before the game he would have to pitch in place of Dallas Braden, before leading the team to a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
Both sides had chances to make it a bigger game as Braden was sidelined with elbow stiffness. Mazzaro gave up a season-high six walks, as the A’s ended the Orioles’ season-high four-game win streak while achieving their own.
In the top of the first, Oakland’s Coco Crisp got to third with one out after a leadoff walk and stealing second, but Conor Jackson struck out and Kurt Suzuki popped out to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Luke Scott provided the second out at home as he tried to round the final plate. Beforehand, he got on base with a leadoff double and made it to third on a wild pitch.
The top of the third provided even more entertainment when the A’s Cliff Pennington and Crisp led off with consecutive singles. After a failed bunt, both runners successfully put together a double steal. Though not much materialized, one out later, Suzuki singled in Pennington for the game’s first run.
Baltimore had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the third, but Miguel Tejada grounded into a double play.
In the bottom of the inning, the Orioles’ Julio Lugo got on base also after being hit, then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Cesar Izturis. Corey Patterson then sacrificed Izturis to third and one out later, Nick Markakis walked. However, the runners remained stranded as Ty Wigginton grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Crisp made it to third base for the third time in the top of the fifth when he led off with a triple. Daric Barton made it to base after being hit, and one out later, on a Suzuki groundout, Crisp made it home for the first time to give the A’s a 2-0 lead. Oakland got runners on the corner again when Kevin Kouzmanoff made it on an errant throw by Tejada, but Adam Rosales flew out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Barton singled with one out, bringing in Jason Berken to relieve Brian Matusz. Berken walked Jackson and then gave up a single to Suzuki to make it 3-1. Kouzmanoff then hit into a double play to end the inning.
Markakis led off with a double in the bottom of the eighth and Baltimore subsequently exchanged outs and runners on base. Scott made it 3-2 with an RBI double.
The A’s got an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Crisp scored his second run. He led off with a double, moved over on a sacrifice and scored on a single.
Game notes: Oakland’s four stolen bags were a season-high. The teams play again Wednesday at 4:05pm.
