With an open date in their schedule, the Oakland Athletics hosted their annual Community Fund Golf Classic Thursday in Pleasanton, with proceeds going to the A’s Community Fund. Also this year, a portion of the proceeds goes toward A’s pitcher Craig Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation, which he established in 2008 to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

The Strike 3 Foundation also honors Breslow’s sister, Lesley, a survivor of pediatric thyroid cancer for over 15 years.

A’s pitchers Dallas Braden and Michael Wertz and outfielder Gabe Gross participated in the Pepsi Long Drive Contest, which took place on the first hole of the Hill Course at Castlewood Country Club.

Other current A’s players who were expected to participate include Daric Barton, Jerry Blevens, Gio Gonzalez, Cliff Pennington, Ryan Sweeney and Brad Ziegler, along with Manager Bob Geren and coaches Mike Gallego and Todd Steverson. Former A’s scheduled to appear included Shooty Babitt, Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Mike Norris, Billy North, John Odom, Joe Rudi and A’s broadcaster Ray Fosse.

A’s broadcasters Glen Kuiper, Ken Korash, Vince Cotroneo and former Voice of the A’s Monte Moore were also on hand, along with General Manager Billy Beane and Assistant GM David Forst.

Oakland resumes its schedule Friday when the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Coliseum for a three-game weekend series. Game time is 7:05 Friday and Saturday, and 1:05 on Sunday.

NOTES: Lefthander Brett Anderson, on the disabled list with left elbow tendonitis, has resumed throwing but the A’s don’t expect him back before the All-Star break. Eric Chavez, on the DL with bulging neck discs, had his scheduled rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento pushed back from June 14. And outfielder Travis Buck, out with a strained right oblique, shut down his rehab assignment on June 16 because of a leg problem.

Three Athletics pitchers – Joey Devine, Josh Outman and John Meloan – have underwent season-ending Tommy John surgeries. Right-hander Justin Duchscherer had season-ending hip surgery on June 3, and there’s speculation his career may have ended.
