Besides a home run, Cincinnati’s top pitcher in wins only gave up three singles to the Oakland Athletics in a 4-2 victory.

The Reds remain one game behind St. Louis, who also won, for the division lead.

Arroyo (7-3), who leads the team in wins, won his second straight start and gave up no walks after giving up six in his previous start.

The A’s Dallas Braden, meanwhile, failed in his eighth attempt to win again after his Mother’s Day perfect game. He gave up ten hits.

Oakland, at 34-39, are at their worst point so far this season.

Cincinnati’s Drew Stubb’s sacrifice was critical in the top of the second as it allowed Jonny Gomes and Jay Bruce to move towards the left side of the diamond. One out later, Gomes and Bruce, who obtained leadoff singles, scored on a single by Corky Miller to give the Reds a 2-0 lead.

Cincinnati also obtained a leadoff single in the top of the third. Joey Votto followed with a double to bring in Brandon Phillips and Scott Rolen walked. Braden was able to avoid further damage by getting the next three batters out.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, the A’s Cliff Pennington singled and newly returned Coco Crisp brought him in with a home run to cut lead to within one, 3-2.

In the top of the fifth, with runners on the corner and two outs, Pennington’s second misthrow in two days, allowed Stubbs to get on base safely and Rolen to score.

Oakland got two singles in the bottom of the ninth against closer Francisco Cordero with one out. However, after a pinch runner, Cordero was able to recover by inducing a game-ending double play from Ryan Sweeney.

Game notes: Votto has four RBIs in the past two games. The A’s Eric Patterson went down to AAA in exchange for Coco Crisp, who returned from the DL. This Thursday at 10:40am, some players and more will be playing in the annual Community Fund Golf Classic at Pleasanton’s Castlewood Country Club. Oakland received relief pitcher Ross Wolf and cash for outfielder/catcher Jake Fox. The teams have a 12:35pm start Wednesday.
