The A’s continued their homestand against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in what is becoming a hotly-contested AL West division race. Lefties Joe Saunders (4-6, 4.78 ERA) and Dallas Braden (4-5, 3.77) faced off. It would be a win for Saunders, who was in control the entire game, and another loss for Braden, whose last win was his perfect game a month ago.
In the third Kevin Frandsen reached second on an error by shortstop Cliff Pennington. Erick Aybar bunted towards Kevin Kouzmanoff at third, who watched the ball remain just barely inside the foul line for a base hit; this advanced Frandsen to third. Howie Kendrick reached base on a fielder’s choice as Aybar grounded out, and Bobby Abreu struck out. Torii Hunter singled to left, and Frandsen came home. In the sixth, the Angels erupted for five runs off Braden: Hunter singled back towards the mound, moved to second on Hideki Matsui’s base hit to right, and ran through third base coach Ron Roenicke’s stop sign at third on his way to the plate as Juan Rivera singled to center. Matsui came home from third when Robb Quinlan singled to right; Quinlan and Frandsen both scored when Aybar tripled 400 feet to right center off Brad Ziegler, who had relieved Braden
The visitors added a run in the eighth when Rivera homered 388 feet to center, and another in the ninth when Aybar singled to left off reliever Cedric Bowers, reached second on Kendrick’s base hit to right, and came home when Matsui hit a grounder to right. The Elephants’ sole run was also in the ninth, off the bat of Kouzmanoff to score Daric Barton.
Saunders is the winner (5-6, 9 ip, 7 h, 1 er, 1 w, 2 k) and Braden the loser (4-6, 5.2 ip, 11 h, 5 r, 4 3er, 1 w, 4 k).
The two teams conclude the series at 12:35 p.m. PDT on Thursday, June 10, with Ervin Santana (6-3, 3.29) facing fellow righthander Trevor Cahill (4-2, 3.21).
The A’s selected 20 players in the third day of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, which finished with rounds 31 through 50 today. The A’s selected 35 college players and 15 high school athletes in the three day draft, which began on Monday. The total includes 24 pitchers, four catchers, 14 infielders and eight outfielders.
The A’s drafted several local players in day three of the draft, including third baseman Bobby Geren of San Ramon Valley HS in the 36th round. Geren is the son of A’s manager Bob Geren. Two players from Stockton were selected, including outfielder Louie Lechich in the 42nd round from St. Mary’s HS and outfielder Nicholas Rosso in the 49th round from Lincoln HS. The A’s 31st round pick was first baseman Aaron Judge from Linden (CA) HS and their 41st round choice was catcher Andrew Knapp from Granite Bay (CA) HS. The A’s also drafted third baseman Zach Johnson from Ohlone College and California HS in San Ramon in the 48th round.
