The 2010 season is one-third spent, and the A’s (29-26, .527) are a hair’s breadth behind Texas (28-25, .528), in the AL West. Tonight they hosted the Minnesota Twins, who are in the AL Central lead (31-23, .574). RHP Scott Baker (5-4, 4.48 ERA) faced lefty Dallas Braden (4-5, 3.60). The result would be a long evening for 21,703 fans who expected fireworks after the game but saw them during the contest as well.

Minnesota drew first blood in the initial frame when DH Joe Mauer singled to left and Justin Morneau, who came into the game with a .369 average, homered into the seats above the out-of-town scoreboard in right. In the fourth Oakland got on the board when Daric Barton doubled to right center, advanced when Ryan Sweeney grounded out, and came home when Kurt Suzuki singled to center. In the sixth, Mauer grounded to center, took second when Morneau walked, and came home when Jason Kubel singled to left. Morneau scored Delmon Young doubled to left over Kevin Kouzmanoff’s head.

The A’s rallied in the seventh when DH Jack Cust walked, and came home on Kouzmanoff’s shot off the upper deck facing in left. In the eighth, Rajai Davis tied the game, 4-4, with a solo homer to left. But in the eleventh, Morneau doubled to left, and scored on Kubel’s base hit; the Athletics could not score in the bottom of the inning.

As with extra-inning games in general, the decisions went to two relievers: Andrew “Daily” Bailey is now 0-2 and Matt “Grrrrrrrr” Guerrier is 1-1.

The two teams meet again at 6:05 p.m. PDT on Saturday, June 5, with RHP Trevor Cahill (4-2, 3.02) battling LHP Francisco Liriano (4-3, 3.29).

The A’s placed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson on the 15-day disabled list today with left elbow inflammation and optioned catcher Landon Powell to Triple-A Sacramento. To take their spots on the roster, the A’s have recalled left-handed pitcher Cedrick Bowers and right-handed pitcher Henry Rodriguez from Sacramento.

Anderson returns to the disabled list for the second time in 2010 as he was also out from April 25 to May 28 with the same injury. He went 1-0 with a 2.35 in two starts following his return, including yesterday at Boston when he allowed two runs on five hits in 2.0 innings before being removed from the game. The 22-year old left-hander is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA in six starts overall with Oakland this year and is 13-12 with a 3.80 ERA in 36 starts over two seasons. Anderson agreed to terms on a four-year contract through 2013 with club options for 2014 and 2015 on April 16.

Powell was batting .261 with a home run and five RBI in 15 games over three stints with the A’s. His third stint began on May 26 and went 3 for 7 (.429) with a home run and two RBI in two starts at catcher at Detroit last weekend. Powell is also hitting .167 with a home run, two RBI and 10 walks in 11 games with Sacramento.

Bowers was 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA and .159 opponents batting average in 18 relief appearances with Sacramento and joins the A’s for the second time this year. He was brought up for the first time May 16 and made his only appearance May 19 against Detroit before he was optioned back to Sacramento May 29. The 32-year old left-hander posted a 9.00 ERA in his one relief appearance with Oakland.

Rodriguez returns to Oakland for the third time this year and has an 8.10 ERA in three relief appearances over his first two stints with the A’s. He was called up for the first time on May 5 and posted a 13.50 ERA in one relief appearance before he was optioned May 14. The 23-year old right-hander returned May 16 and compiled a 4.50 ERA in two more outings before he was sent back to Sacramento May 20. Rodriguez is 0-2 with six saves and a 2.40 ERA in 14 relief appearances with the River Cats. He held the opposition to a .148 batting average and struck out 22 in 15.0 innings.
