The month of June began with the A’s 2.5 games out of first place in the AL West, 27 and 29 (.482. Two of the losses in the second column had come at the hands of the New York Yankees, who sit atop the eastern division at 30-23 (.566) a game ahead of their perennial nemesis, the Boston Red Sox. Starting were southpaw Gio Gonzalez (5-2, 2.17 ERA) for Oakland and RHP A.J. Burnett (5-3, 3.99) for New York. Burnett would be the winner (7 ip, 3 h, 2 er, 3 w, 5 k, 1 hr) and Gonzalez the loser (6.1 ip,5 h, 4 er, 4 w, 4 k, 1 hr, 1 hb) as the Yankees swept the series with a 4-2 win. Mariano Rivera picked up his 14th save after pitching the ninth.
The pinstripers scored in the first on mirror-image doubles, one by leadoff hitter Derek Jeter to left and – two strikeouts later – another by DH Alex Rodriguez to right. In the bottom of the frame Oakland DH David DeJesus answered with a two-bagger of his own to center. Josh Willingham’s homer to left, on a 3-1 pitch, made it 2-1 for the Elephants. But in the fourth, the wheels came off Stomper’s car as Rodriguez shot a grounder down the line past Conor Jackson at first, Robinson Cano walked and former Athletic Nick Swisher shot a rocket over the left field fence to make it 4-2 in favor of the Bronx Bombers.
The Athletics next play in Boston on Friday, June 3 at 4:10 p.m. PDT with southpaw Josh Outman (1-0, 2.08 ERA) scheduled to face RHP Clay Buchholz (4-3 ,3.41)
