Nick Markakis never failed to get on base, reaching base three times as the Baltimore Orioles defeated Oakland, 5-1.
Markakis's second time on base was the game winner. He and Tejada started off the bottom of the sixth the way they did in their previous scoring inning. Both were walked, but this time by Tyson Ross instead of starter Dallas Braden. Both runners then moved over on a wild pitch and scored on two consecutive sac flys to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead.
Neither team did much spectacular offensively. Baltimore was just able to deliver more consistently at the right time and capitalize on the A's mistakes.
Oakland scored their first run in the top of the second, when Jack Cust led off with a walk. One batter later, Gabe Gross doubled and then Mark Ellis scored Cust with a groundout to give a 1-0 lead.
However, in the top of the third, after the A's loaded the bases with two outs, they popped out to end the inning.
Baltimore's first run also came off a walk, but not the leadoff walk, although both walks were consecutive. A fielder's choice groundout took out Markakis, who was the leadoff walk. Then, Miguel Tejada scored on a throwing error after a fielder's choice groundout to tie the game at one in the bottom of the fourth.
Not content to leave it at that, Baltimore scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Markakis led off this time with a home run. Ty Wigginton then walked and was replaced on the bases by Scott Moore. Matt Wieters doubled in Moore later.
Braden pitched four innings, matching his career-low, but because his sore left ankle acted up, as Jeremy Guthrie gave up just one run in his third straight start. It was the second straight start Braden left the game earlier then anticipated due to physical issues.
Game notes: Two more of the Oriole's relievers went on the disabled list for a total of five. The teams play the middle game of this three-game set Wednesday at 4:05pm.
