Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, helping Jeremy Bonderman pick up his first win in over a month as Detroit defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-2 Thursday afternoon at the Coliseum.
It was the Tigers’ fourth win in their last five games.
Earlier, Cabrera, singled in the third inning to snap an 0-for-12 slump. Magglio Ordonez collected two RBI, and Ramon Santiago drove in a run.
Bonderman (2-2) allowed three hits and four walks over six innings while striking out a season-high eight. He’s now 17th on Detroit’s all-time career whiff list with 854, passing Milt Wilcox.
A’s starter Tyson Ross (1-2) worked four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to take the loss. Ross stepped in to the rotation when Justin Duchscherer was unable to start last Saturday.
Oakland first baseman Daric Barton singled in a run in the seventh.
A’s NOTES: The Athletics will honor Dallas Braden for his perfect game during special pre-game ceremonies on Friday, prior to the A’s interleague game against San Francisco. The ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m. …. The A’s recalled RHP Vic Mazzaro from Triple-A Sacramento, where he was 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA in seven games. To make room on the roster, Oakland optioned RHP Henry Rodriguez to the PCL River Cats.
