There is no question that injuries can play a major role during the course of a season. An injury to a key player has the potential to derail a team’s hopes for the year. Some players, also, seem to be injury prone. In addition, as a a player gets older, the the injury tends to be more severe and the player takes longer to recover from the injury.

The injury jinx has been especially hard on the Oakland Athletics again this year. The A’s have used the disabled list 76 times since the start of the 2007 season. They used it 22 times in 2007, an Oakland record 25 times in 2008 and 17 times in 2009. As of the moment, the A’s have used the DL 8 times so far this season. The A’s placed Justin Duchscherer on the DL again. Other key players on the list this year is their fine second beaseman, Mark Ellis , left-hander, Brett Anderson and centerfielder Coco Crisp.

Teams have to go on and play every day. Teams then have to make decisions. Sometimes an injury can open the door for a play to step in and make a contribution. Many players just need a chance to play and show that they can perform at the big league level. Other times , teams will scour the waiver wire looking to pick up a player that can help them until the injured player returns. Every player that goes on the DL fears becoming a “”Wally Pipp”

Wally Pipp was a first baseman for the New York Yankees in the 1920’s. He missed a game with an injury and was replaced by Lou Gehrig. Pipp never played first base again as Gehrig went on to play in 2130 consecutive games.
