Whether it was the curse of Friday the 13th, or the superior play of the visitors, the Athletics lost the first game of a triduum to the Chicago White Sox, 4-3. Brandon McCarthy had but one bad inning, giving up all four of the Sox’ four runs in the second, and that was enough to put a comeback win out of reach as all but one of the Pale Hose came to bat.
The attempted resurgence came with three runs in the seventh, but that was all. In that frame Ryan Sweeney, Hideki Matsui and Kurt Suzuki, in rapid succession, had base hits and loaded the bases with no outs. A wild pitch from Humber combined with a single by David DeJesus to cut Chicago’s lead to 4-2. Humber then left the game, relieved by Jesse Crain, at which point Kevin Kouzmanoff’s sacrifice fly made it 4-3. However, DeJesus took too great a lead at first and was picked off, to end the rally.
Humber gets the win (3-3, 6 ip, 6 h, 3 er, 1 k, 3.18 ERA) and fellow righthander McCarthy the loss (1-4, 7 ip, 5 h, 4 r, 3 er, 2 w, 6 k, 3.34). The two teams next meet at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 with RHPs Gavin Floyd (4-2, 2.67) and Tyson Ross (2-2, 2.51) facing off.
