About 2 weeks ago an incident occurred during a game between the New York Yankees and the Oakland Athletics. To the casual fan it didn’t seem like much at the time but all of a sudden the A’s pitcher was screaming at future Hall of Famer and Yankee star Alex Rodriguez.
It seemed innocuous but Rodriguez violated one of the unwritten rules of baseball. Baseball has tons of written rules but the players know the unwritten rules. Rodriguez was returning to 1st base after a ball went foul into the stands. He ran straight across and over the pitcher’s mound. The unwritten rule is that the mound is the pitcher’s office and you do not violate my space. The A’s pitcher let Rodriguez have it.
Rodriguez said that he had never heard of such a rule but former teammate, David Wells, said that was “nonsense.
There are many such unwritten rules in baseball and now a new book “the Baseball Codes” written by Jason Turnbow and Michael Duca has been published.
I asked Mr.Duca what the book was about. Duca replied that it is about “ the unwritten rules of baseball, all mores, social codes and unspoken agreements that keep the game civil.”
The book has many stories and anecdotes that the reader will love. It will give you insight into the behind the scenes stuff that goes into a clubhouse.
If you love baseball and if you love stories about baseball you will love “The Baseball Codes”
