Ben Sheets lasted just 3.1 innings on Sunday in Toronto as the A’s lost to the Blue Jays 9-3. The loss ended a disastrous road trip that saw the A’s win just one game while losing five.
Sheets gave up 10 hits of which three were home runs. All nine Toronto runs were scored off Sheets. All nine runs were earned and pushed Sheets’ ERA up to 7.12.
The A’s have to be concerned about Sheets and his poor performance. Sheets has lost his last two starts and has given up 17 runs (all earned) in those appearances.
The A’s lack of offense did not help them on the road trip. The A’s were outscored 46-21 in the six games.
The one bright spot of the day was the pitching of the A’s bullpen. Brad Kilby came on in relief of Sheets. Kilby lasted 3.2 innings and gave up no runs on three hits while striking out three. Craig Breslow threw a one scoreless inning to close the game out for the A’s.
The A’s now head home for three games with the Texas Rangers and three versus the Tampa Bay Rays. The A’s are hoping the friendly confines of the Coliseum will help them get back on the winning track.
Random Notes: the A’s are 7-11 in their last 18 games … the A’s ended April with a 12-12 mark … the A’s are 4-8 on the road compared to 9-5 at home … the A’s had 15 stolen bases in April … the bullpen had just three saves in the month of April … the team has used the disabled list 10 times so far this season … Kurt Suzuki is the latest player to go on the DL.
This Day in A’s History: On this date in 1975, Reggie Jackson recorded his 1000th hit as an Athletic in 4-3 win at Chicago … in 2001, Mark Mulder threw a three-hit shutout in an A’s 6-0 win over Toronto.
